Meet The Surgeon

Dr. Abeer Syal BS MD FRCSC

Originally from Ontario, Dr. Abeer Syal has made Langley and the surrounding Fraser Valley his home since 2012. In that time, he has earned praise from his patients, colleagues, and hospital administrators and staff for his professionalism, technical abilities, knowledge, leadership, affable nature and general enjoyment of orthopaedics.

Dr. Syal has always been competitive and a driven athlete as he excelled at tennis throughout high school. This led him to earning combined academic & athletic scholarships playing for the NAIA nationally ranked men’s varsity tennis team at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. During his tenure at CU Dr. Syal earned team MVP honours, All-Conference honours, NAIA National Student-Athlete honours, in addition to numerous academic honours. Dr. Syal earned his Bachelor of Science degree from CU in 1999 and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Dr. Syal then attended the University of Western Ontario School of Medicine in London, Ontario, where he also continued to play on the varsity men’s tennis team. After graduating from UWO in 2003 with a MD, Dr. Syal ventured west and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2008. Staying true to his love of sports medicine he continued westward to the coast and completed a fellowship in Reconstructive Arthroscopic Surgery & Joint Preservation at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC in 2009.

With the unprecedented tight job market across Canada Dr. Syal worked throughout the country from 2009 to 2011 as a locum orthopaedic surgeon, gaining work experience and expertise in both orthopaedic trauma, arthroscopy, and arthroplasty surgery. The west coast climate and lifestyle were too appealing to pass up and so in 2012 Dr. Syal joined the staff at Langley Memorial Hospital in Langley, BC. Since joining the staff at LMH Dr. Syal has had the privilege and responsibility of serving as the Division Head of Orthopaedics and the Department Head of Surgery. Dr. Syal is involved with teaching medical students as a UBC Clinical Instructor in the Division of Comprehensive Orthopaedics, within the UBC Department of Orthopaedics.

Dr. Syal is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. He is an active member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, AO Trauma, and the Doctors of BC.

In addition to general orthopaedic surgery Dr. Syal has subspecialty interest and expertise in sports medicine with arthroscopic reconstructive surgery of the knee & shoulder, upper extremity trauma surgery, joint replacement of the hip, knee & shoulder, and regenerative orthopaedics. Dr. Syal provides a patient centered approach and institutes leading edge techniques in the management and care of his patients. Dr. Syal continues to attend orthopaedic conferences and training seminars to stay up to date on the advances in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Syal has continued playing tennis and shooting hoops with his kids when work doesn’t get in the way. He loves music and cheering on his kids at their sporting events. He resides in Langley with his wife and children. “My ethos is to treat all of my patients as I would my own family, with the goal of giving them back their quality of life.”
